Pausing Home Care Worker Immigration pilots application intake

The Current Status

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has officially reached the application intake cap for the Home Care Worker Pilot for the current year. This "pause" means that new applications are no longer being accepted under this specific stream as the government prepares to transition to a more permanent caregiver program.

Why the Pause?

The pilot programs were designed to test new ways of bringing caregivers to Canada. Because demand for these spots is extremely high, the caps are filled quickly. This pause allows the IRCC to process the backlog and finalize the requirements for the new permanent caregiver program that was announced recently to replace the temporary pilots.

What are your alternatives?

If you were planning to apply under this pilot, do not lose hope. There are other pathways available depending on your work experience and education:

  • Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP): Some employers may still be able to hire foreign caregivers through the traditional LMIA process.

  • Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP): Certain provinces have specific streams for healthcare workers and assistants.

  • Express Entry: If you have high education and language scores, you may qualify for category-based draws for healthcare professionals.
